Ceramic Data Storage for Research Objects

Chris Hartgerink

This is a presentation I gave at the Digital Competence Centre (DCC) Utrecht on January 13th, 2026. In it, I discuss various storage mechanism and provide an introduction to a new information carrier that is based on ceramic coated glass, which subsequently gets data etched into it using the same data encoding as QR codes. The presentation ends with a call for interest in a pilot project to trial such Ceramic Data Storage for research archival purposes, which would start late 2026 when approved by the company Cerabyte, who are working on producing the hardware for this information carrier.
