De tijgermug rukt op: een review van een research paper

Gerben ter Riet

Chikungunya is an infectious disease that, among other things, causes severe and long-lasting joint inflammations. For a long time, we considered chikungunya, malaria, dengue, and Zika as (sub)tropical diseases that posed little threat to Western Europe. But is that still true? A recent study sheds more light on this question.

In this contribution, I review (in Dutch) Sandeep Tegar, Dominic P. Brass, Bethan V. Purse, Christina A. Cobbold, Steven M. White; Temperature-sensitive incubation, transmissibility and risk of Aedes albopictus-borne chikungunya virus in Europe. J R Soc Interface 1 February 2026; 23 (235): 20250707.
